COVID-19 testing now available to all Albertans regardless of symptoms

Jun 2, 2020 | 12:20 PM

Albertans across the province and in the North Zone are now eligible for COVID-19 testing regardless of symptoms.

The tests are offered by appointment and are free at Alberta Health Services (AHS) assessment centre locations across the North Zone.

Tests can be booked online through the AHS website, or through calling 811. Those interested in booking a test must complete the online assessment.

The expanded testing to those with or without symptoms was announced last week by Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw, at her live COVID-19 update. AHS says the expanded testing is part of the province’s effort in containing the novel coronavirus, and is an important step in Alberta’s relaunch strategy.

The testing is done via a throat swab and will indicate whether the person is positive for COVID-19 at the time the swab is taken, even if no symptoms are present. AHS say the testing will not be able to tell if someone has previously had COVID-19, or if someone is immune to it.

The results are to be provided to those tested by phone within a few days of the appointment.
