Métis Nation of Alberta to host virtual Métis Fest during Indigenous History Month
June is National Indigenous History Month, a month dedicated to showcasing the contributions, history and heritage of Indigenous people across the country.
Marilyn Lizeé, Treasurer on the Board of the Métis Local 1990, says the month is important to Métis people due to the recognition of all of the contributions Métis peoples have made to the country before it was even a country.
“A lot of times, we were known as the forgotten people, or we were hiding in plain sight, we were never really truly recognized by the Canadian government, so for us, this is a big, huge step forward in recognizing us as a people, as a nation.”
Lizeé is also a coordinator for this year’s Métis Fest, organized by the Métis Nation of Alberta.
