City looking at large-scale upgrades and changes to Revolution Place

Jun 10, 2020 | 5:30 AM

The City is considering different options for Revolution Place.

Last month, it approved adding immediate renovations to the 2020 Capital Budget that would include box office upgrades and concession and lobby upgrades. The cost would be $544,000.

At Tuesday’s Community Services Committee Meeting, the Committee was presented with more potential renovations to the facility. The Committee decided to request more information on the presented options to come forward at a Council Committee of the Whole meeting.

“The first option that Council asked for more details on was a smaller option that would essentially add some luxury suites, improve the loading dock facilities, and make some other improvements that, while they’re not minor parse, they’re not a complete overhaul of the facility,” Said Mayor Bill Given, “The second option that Council asked administration to bring more details back on was essentially a major retrofit of the facility.”

The option that included luxury suites and other improvements is estimated to cost approximately $4 million, while the full renovation option is estimated to cost around $30 million.

The $4 million option would also see a new entrance with reception and a box office.

The full renovation would see a minimum of 5,000 fixed seats, multiple premium suites of varying sizes and loge options in the arena.

It would also see a lounge area and changes to the dressing rooms. There would be an expansion of the arena, as well as amenities for performers and guests in the Bowes Event Centre.

Mayor Given says they expect to see more information and decisions made in the coming months.

“Council is considering whether there are some more improvements that could be made to extend the life of the facility, and Council is deciding whether or not they would like to look at something that would extend the life of the facility for potentially another five or six years, or for potentially another 20 to 25 years.”
