Second Friday in June marks Farmer’s Day

Jun 12, 2020 | 2:46 PM

Friday, June 12, marked UFA Farmer’s Day.

It is held every year on the second Friday in June.

Usually, the UFA stores hold celebrations, but those can’t happen this year due to COVID-19.

Instead, the company will be donating $40,000 to be used for projects that support communities.

The Rural Communities Foundation is taking applications for projects related to education events, recreation, or cultural programs and facilities.

This is on top of $60,000 given in May to local food banks and other efforts to help during the pandemic.

“Farmers and ranchers in our province continue to press forward, and there are no days off especially during seeding,” says Scott Bolton, President and CEO of UFA, in a release from the company. “We know the road ahead is long and we will continue to support the farmers and ranchers that we serve.

“Today on Farmer’s Day, and every day we proudly stand by our farmers, just as we have for over 100 years. We are in this together and on behalf of everyone at UFA, we say thank you.”

UFA Farmer’s Day started in 1945 as a way to salute the agriculture industry and was a statutory holiday at one time.

Landmarks around Alberta, the Legislature and Calgary Tower among them, will be lit up in UFA green and orange all weekend as part of the celebration.
