Motor vehicle services, including registrations, unavailable to Albertans June 19-22

Jun 15, 2020 | 9:34 AM

Albertans will be unable to access motor vehicle services through this weekend.

These services include things like vehicle registrations and driver’s license renewals, among others.

The temporary shut-down is because the Motor Vehicles System (MOVES), which tracks all driver and vehicle information in Alberta, is being updated.

In order to complete the upgrade, the system has to be shuttered for four days, according to the province. The shut-down will officially start at 9:00 p.m. on June 18 and will go through June 22.

The province stated that the system will be operational again by 8:00 a.m. on June 23.

In all, the following services will be unavailable while the upgrade is underway:

  • Knowledge tests, road tests and road test bookings
  • Vehicle registrations and renewals
  • Driver’s license suspension reinstatements
  • Driver’s license and ID card services (incl. new applications, renewals, temporary licenses, exchanges, duplicates and reclassifications)
  • Driver’s abstracts, searches, in-transit permits, etc.

The provincial government noted that drivers whose licenses or ID cards are set to expire on or around these dates should plan to complete their renewals before June 19.

Some registry agents are offering services remotely, and Albertans requiring renewal are advised to connect with their local agent to explore options for remote renewal ahead of the shut-down.

“We appreciate Albertans’ patience while we make this necessary update,” said Minister of Service Alberta Nate Glubish, in a release.

“I’ve been clear that I want to take Alberta from worst to first when it comes to online registry services and this update will enable us to develop such services including, for example, online driver’s licence renewals.”

Additionally, Albertans with expiring vehicle registrations have until the end of June to renew.

During the shut-down, residents can pay outstanding fines online only.

Registry agents will be unable to process fine payment during the outage, and traffic courts remain closed to the public due to COVID-19.
