Repair work being done on 98 Street, 84 Avenue, 116 Avenue

Jun 15, 2020 | 5:30 AM

City Hall says a project to repave part of 98 Street north of 104 Avenue should be completely finished by the end of the month.

The City’s Mark Hoseasson says the pavement needed to be replaced.

“We’re doing a mill and fill operation, which is basically taking out the existing layer of the asphalt and putting a new layer on to restore the rideability and get rid of the surface defects. That road was hitting our triggers for needing that work. I think anybody who drove (on it) this spring probably saw that.”

Line painting will be the final stage of the work.

Sub-surface water softening the road has forced some repair work on 84 Avenue.

Hoseasson says it is taking place just west of the bridge going up the hill.

“We put in a sub-drain on the one bad location last summer. it worked really well, so this was our proof of concept. Now, we’ve come back and we’re putting the sub-drains on the north and south side of that hill.”

Hoseasson says that will be followed by work to strengthen the layer under the asphalt before it is re-paved. There is two-way traffic while the work is taking place. It should also be done by the end of the month.

Also, upgrades are coming to the eastbound side of 116 Avenue this summer.

Hoseasson says the work between the railway tracks and 92 Street will be done in two parts.

“From just east of the rail crossing to Lakeland Drive, we’re looking at doing an overlay there, milling and filling, restoring the asphalt. Then, from Lakeland Driver to 92 Street, that’s an FDR operation going there to strengthen that road underneath again.”

FDR stands for Full Depth Reclamation, where the old pavement is pulverized into the gravel base, then a combination of foamed asphalt and cement is put down into that same layer using the same machine. A similar technique will be used during the above-mentioned work on 84 Avenue.

Start and finish dates have not been set, but Hoseasson says the 166 Avenue work should start soon and be finished in July.
