COVID-19 UPDATE

State of public health emergency lifted in Alberta as province adds 20 new COVID-19 cases

Jun 15, 2020 | 3:54 PM

There were 20 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Alberta on Monday, while the government says it will be lapsing the state of public health emergency that has been in place since March 15.

Health Minister Tyler Shandro made the announcement during Monday’s COVID-19 update.

“We’ve come a long way since the state of emergency was declared on March 15,” said Shandro, adding the past three months have been difficult as Albertans have made sacrifices and adapted to a “new normal.”

“We faced an enormous test, and we passed with flying colours,” he said.

Shandro was clear that even though the state of emergency is lapsing, it does not remove or impact the existing orders Dr. Deena Hinshaw has put in place. It also has no effect on her ability to issue more orders in the days ahead, if needed.

“COVID is still with us and we must all still remain vigilant,” said Shandro.

With the 20 new cases added on Monday, there are now 440 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta, with 6,862 cases are considered recovered as of June 15.

Alberta Health’s geospatial data was not updated on Monday, meaning local case totals were not updated from Sunday. Totals among Peace Region municipalities as of June 14 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 18 cases (Three active, 15 recovered)
  • County of Grande Prairie: Seven cases (All recovered)
  • M.D. of Greenview: Three cases (All recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 67 cases (57 recovered, ten deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 40 cases (35 recovered, five deaths)

  • Clear Hills County: Ten cases (All active)
  • County of Northern Lights: One case (Recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 33 cases (Two active, 31 recovered)

There was one death reported over the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll in Alberta to 151.

Hospitalizations in Alberta dropped to 31 as of Monday, with seven of those people admitted to ICU. In Northern Alberta, there are three people in hospital, one of whom is in intensive care.

The province completed 3,462 tests over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of tests completed as of June 15 to over 343,000. 24,049 people in the North Zone have received a test as of Monday.
