Fire in shed at Wembley Arena deemed suspicious

Jun 24, 2020 | 6:56 PM

The Wembley Fire Department says it has evidence that a fire at the Source Energy Arena and Recreation Centre Wednesday afternoon is suspicious.

The fire started in a shed on the south side of the arena around 3 p.m. Wednesday. According to Deputy Chief of Training and Logistics with the County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service Jason Nesbitt, the blaze spread into a mezzanine/storage area inside the arena itself, but crews were able to bring it under control and limit the damage. Crews say they will be on the scene for a few more hours to finish overhaul work.

Arena officials say it will be several days before they can find out what was lost.

County of Grande Prairie, Beaverlodge and Sexsmith firefighters came in to help the Wembley Fire Department fight this blaze.

Fire officials ask anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in that the area Wednesday afternoon to contact Beaverlodge RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Beaverlodge RCMP and the County Fire Marshall are investigating.
