City Hall to study food truck regulations

Grande Prairie City Hall will be taking another look at regulations governing food trucks.

Mayor Bill Given said following a presentation from an operator in Grande Prairie, that council decided to go ahead with three things.

“One, (we) asked administration to meet with the person that brought the concern forward. We asked administration to identify some potential new sites for food trucks in 2020. And then, with a longer-term view, we asked administration to bring forward an overall review of the food truck regulations in the city.”

The presentation was made in regards to a pair of inquiries: to ask about having a way to park and operate along a roadside, as well as to park their food truck at home if they are renters. Current city regulations don’t allow home-based businesses in rentals with two or more units.

However, one issue that was raised by council during discussions was that while restaurants pay property taxes in Grande Prairie, food trucks do not.

Given says that is why some current limitations are in place.

“We want to ensure that we’re fair to those existing businesses, but that we’re open and ready for innovation and something that there’s obviously demand for in the market. I think that balancing act is something that council will consider when we look at the overall review of the system.”

Given says that the review of regulations governing food trucks would be for the 2021 season, not 2020.
