Jail time in jailhouse attack, fraud, and counterfeit money arrests

Jul 2, 2020 | 5:30 AM

All three men charged in a beating at the Peace River Correctional Centre that left another man in a coma have been given jail time.

Alberta Justice says Herbert Charles Wanihadie of Grovedale was handed a six-year prison sentence June 25 in Peace River court. He was convicted of a charge of aggravated assault June 13.

Previously, Dylan Moberly-Horseman of Peace River was given a five-year term, and Kyle Malcolm beaver three years, eight months, for the same charge.

They were all arrested after an attack at the Peace River Correctional Centre on March 11, 2018, left Dylan Gogan in a coma. He had been arrested after a stabbing attack in Grande Prairie. He was flown home to Nova Scotia after the attack and a stay of proceedings was put in place on his charges.

His co-accused in the stabbing case, Stephanie Plamondon, pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated assault August 25 of last year. She was given a six-month time served jail sentence. An attempted murder charge was withdrawn.

Theft from business leads to jail time

Alberta Justice says a Grande Prairie man has been given a nine-month sentence after money was stolen from two Peace region businesses.

Ghislain Dugas was given a 270-day jail sentence, minus nine days credit for pre-trial time already spent in custody, June 25 in Grande Prairie court after a guilty plea to a charge of fraud over $5000.

A charge of theft over $5000 was dropped while a stay of proceedings is in place for two other charges of theft and fraud over $5000.

Dugas was arrested in January of 2018 after a complaint in August of 2017 from a Grande Prairie home improvement business about stolen money. The investigation also led to charges related to a similar theft from a Rycroft business.

Guilty plea in counterfeit money case

One of the two people charged in a local arrest involving counterfeit Canadian and American money has been given jail time by a Lethbridge court.

Alberta Justice says Kevin Charles Ross Dewar was given nine months jail time and 18 months probation after pleading guilty to two charges of uttering or using counterfeit money and one of possession of counterfeit money.

He and Danielle Taylor Marie Greer were arrested on December 5, 2019, outside a home in Wembley.

Grande Prairie RCMP said at the time that a search turned up $2600, in phoney US money, another $50 in counterfeit Canadian money, plus uncut sheets of US money, ink cartridges, a stolen truck and several stolen license plates.

Greer was given a 30-days time served sentence in January after admitting to a charge of uttering or using counterfeit money.

They were also charged by Lloydminster RCMP after reports of counterfeit Canadian and American currency being used in that city. Greer was given a 90 conditional sentence and 12 probation, also in January. Dewer’s charges were withdrawn during his June 25 court appearance.
