Mackenzie County under provincial watch as COVID-19 cases climb

Alberta added 77 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, while the Mackenzie County area has now been placed on Alberta Health’s watch list with active case numbers on the rise in the area.

The area that includes High Level and La Crete was placed under the watch as there were four new cases identified in the area Friday. There are now 13 active cases to go with 35 recovered cases as of the end of the day on July 9.

As per the provincial health department, regions with at least 10 active cases and more than 50 active cases per 100,000 are placed under a watch. At this time, no additional measures or restrictions are being put in place in the region.

“The province is monitoring the risk and discussing with local government(s) and other community leaders the possible need for additional health measures,” reads a statement from Alberta Health.

As of Friday, there has been one outbreak declared in the area by Alberta Health, which is tied to family gatherings in La Crete.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day July 9 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 17 cases (All recovered)
  • County of Grande Prairie: Eight cases (One active, seven recovered)
  • M.D. of Greenview: One case (Recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 72 cases (62 recovered, ten deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 47 cases (Eight active, 34 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: Five cases (All recovered)
  • Northern Sunrise County: Four cases (All recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: Six cases (All recovered)
  • Clear Hills County: 11 cases (Two active, nine recovered)
  • County of Northern Lights: One case (Active)
  • Mackenzie County: 48 cases (13 active, 35 recovered)

There are now 592 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta, while 7,844 people have recovered. One death previously attributed to COVID-19 in the Edmonton Zone was reclassified on Friday, lowering the provincial death toll to 160.

There are now 50 people in hospital with COVID-19, nine of whom are in intensive care. Only one person in Northern Alberta is in hospital.

A total of 514,970 tests have been completed in the province as of the end of day July 9, an increase of 7,801 over the last 24 hours. 35,872 people from the North Zone have been tested during the pandemic.

The next update on COVID-19 statistics in Alberta will come on Monday, as the province no longer updates stats on weekends and holidays.
