CALGARY, AB – A man from Calgary faces numerous charges after allegedly committing wide-scale fraud.

According to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Chun Zhu started gathering personal information from individuals who applied for fake job postings that he set up, dating back to March 2018.

In February 2019, he reportedly used the information from these applications to electronically prepare, print out, and file as many as 317 personal tax returns.

According to the CRA, he received more than $760,000 from these fraudulent returns into numerous bank accounts that he controlled.

Zhu is charged with one count of claiming a refund to which he or any other person is not entitled, two counts of fraud over $5,000, and two counts of obtaining and using another’s identity to commit an indictable offense.

The Public Prosecution Service of Canada reports that, in 2019-2020, the conviction rate for tax-related crimes was 94 per cent.
