The province of Alberta added 368 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend, while hospitalizations and ICU admissions also saw a jump over the last 72 hours.

The province added 165 new cases for Friday, July 17, 106 for Saturday, July 18 and 97 for Sunday, July 19. With those new cases, 1,109 cases are considered active in Alberta.

There were new cases added across the Peace Region over the weekend, including two in the City of Grande Prairie, which now has eight active cases. New cases were also added in the County of Grande Prairie, Saddle Hills County (the region’s first reported case), Clear Hills County and Mackenzie County.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day July 19 are as follows:

Moving above the threshold of 50 cases per 100,000 people over the weekend, Clear Hills County moved on to the province’s COVID-19 watchlist. That becomes the second region in the Peace to be added to the list, with the other being Mackenzie County.

Being on the watchlist means the province is monitoring the risk of spread of the novel coronavirus and is talking to local authorities about the possible need for additional health measures, though none are coming in at this time.

The number of hospitalizations and ICU admissions also took a big jump since the end of day Thursday. Hospitalizations increased by 18 over the last 72 hours, meaning there are now 86 people in hospital in Alberta. Seventeen of those patients are in intensive care.

In the North Zone, six people are now in hospital, with one in intensive care.

Over 23,500 tests were processed between Friday and Sunday in Alberta. There have no been 890,502 tests completed since March, while 41,234 people from Northern Alberta have been tested.

As of the end of day Sunday, the province has confirmed 9,587 cases of COVID-19. Recovered cases account for 86.6 per cent of those cases (8,308), 11.6 per cent of cases are active (1,109) while 1.8 per cent of cases have been fatal (170).
