Last of Summer?

Sun, heat returning to Grande Prairie area for Sunday, early week

Aug 15, 2020 | 7:00 AM

After seeing a bit of a chill over the past week, the Grande Prairie area is set to see a return of summer-like temperatures.

At least for a few days.

Meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada Natalie Hasell says sunny skies and warmer temperatures are just around the corner for the region.

“Temperatures on Sunday and Monday are forecast to be 29, and Tuesday is a high of 26,” said Hasell. “And then we return to closer to normal, or seasonal values, by Wednesday.”

Temperatures over the last week have been sitting below seasonal levels, especially in the overnight period. In the early morning hours of Wednesday, the temperature at the Grande Prairie airport hit 2.0 degrees Celsius, which broke the record low for August 12 by 0.2 degrees.

Hasell says following the three days of summer-like heat, temperatures will begin to roll back to seasonal averages.

“We can see that the daytime temperatures after this three days of warm temperatures go back to daytime temperatures sitting just around 20, or just above 20, and that goes to about the 23rd.

“Then after that, we see daytime temperatures get below 20. But, we are getting towards the end of August, so we do start to see temperatures normally cooling off at that point.”

Saturday is calling for a high of 22 with a chance of morning showers.
