Roadwork project on 99 Avenue downtown begins Tuesday

City crews will begin work on a long stretch of 99 Avenue on Tuesday .

Crews will begin an asphalt overlay project on 99 Avenue from 105 Street (Parkside Inn) to 96 Street (Circle K/Esso) on Tuesday, which Mark Hoseasson, the Capital Construction Supervisor for the City of Grande Prairie, describes as a ‘mill-and-fill operation.’

“We’ll be grinding off a layer of asphalt, and then replacing it with new asphalt on top. And then all the pavement markings will be getting redone through that stretch, with the exception of a couple major intersections that have already been overlayed, at 100 Street and 101 Street, and Resources Road.”

Crews will also be doing spot replacements where curbs, gutters, and sidewalks are cracked or in need of repair. While most of that will have minimal impact on pedestrians, there will be a long section closed for work from 102 to 105 Streets.

“That would be the Parkside Inn to 214 [Place] intersection, on the south side of the road we’ll be replacing the sidewalk along that whole stretch… So, that sidewalk will be closed until the sidewalk is replaced, and the plan is for the contractor to start on that section.”

Hoseasson says the crews will be working in sections, to minimize the impact the work has on traffic.

“Work zones will be down to one lane where the active construction is, but other than that, traffic will be maintained.

“There will always be one lane through the construction zone, and pedestrian traffic should be maintained for the most part except where we’re doing that full replacement, where they’ll just have to use the north side of the road on 100 Ave.”

Weather-permitting, the work is expected to be complete by mid-October.

Also starting Tuesday, traffic lights in various spots across the City will be undergoing inspections, to determine if there is any are in need of repairs or replacing. The inspections are expected to cause some minor traffic delays, as they will require short term lane closures.

Motorists are reminded to be cautious when travelling through construction zones, to watch out for workers, and to follow all posted signage and sign people.
