City of Grande Prairie encouraging residents to celebrate Neighbour Day

Sep 6, 2020 | 6:00 AM

With Neighbour Day approaching on September 19, the City of Grande Prairie is encouraging community members to build stronger relationships with neighbours in their community.

“Now more than ever, initiatives like Neighbour Day are significant for our community,” said Mayor Bill Given, in a statement.

“I encourage everyone to use this day to reach out, introduce yourself to someone new, lend a helping hand, or complete a random act of kindness, big or small, to build those connections.”

The city is encouraging people to get together and reconnect with long time neighbours or get to know new people in your community.

Ideas to celebrate Neighbour Day include having a socially distanced picnic at a local park, encouraging younger kids to participate in a driveway or walkway decorating contest using chalk or inviting neighbours over for a safe and socially distanced afternoon.

Stacey Batt, and event programmer with the City of Grande Prairie, tells EverythingGP that the city is also encouraging residents to recognize their neighbours in the community.

“We are asking citizens to tell us little stories and descriptions of neighbours that have impacted their lives and are just truly outstanding citizens.”

Community members are encouraged to email goodneighbour@cityofgp.com and give a brief 225 word description on why their neighbour is awesome. From there, the city will profile the stories on it’s website and social media accounts.

You can also post your message on the City of Grande Prairie’s Facebook page.

The city has also created a scavenger hunt for all ages to participate in.

“The (scavenger hunt) starts on September 8 and citizens can download an app called Goose Chase, and there’s different tasks that will take them around their neighbourhood,” explained Batt. “They can earn points this way and the neighbourhoods that have the most points at the end of the scavenger hunt will be entered to win a free community picnic.”

The scavenger hunt kicks off on September 8 and runs until September 19.

According to the city, the picnic will likely take place two weeks after the scavenger hunt is completed. The picnic will then take place in a park in the winning communities neighbourhood and everyone will be welcome to attend.
