City of Grande Prairie asks for public input on Revolution Place renovations

Sep 10, 2020 | 12:44 PM

The City of Grande Prairie wants the public to weigh in on potential upgrades and renovations to Revolution Place.

The City has opened an online survey where the public can offer feedback on the proposed project. Forum Research will also do a random phone survey, and a public open house engagement opportunity will be held at the Bowes Events Centre.

The date of the in-person public engagement opportunity will be announced in the coming weeks. Attendees will be required to maintain physical distancing, and wear masks.

Catherine Ridgeway, the Events and Entertainment Manager for the City, says they are seeking public feedback on a wide range of topics.

“We are looking at what sorts of amenities people would like to see in an upgraded facility. Also, what you’ve previously used the facility for and what you would like to see brought to the facility. Also, the viability, how you feel about doing the renovations now, or maybe later in the future, or not at all.”

As it stands, the Revolution Place Revitalization Plans looks as follows:

  • Proposed renovations:
    • Increase to 5,000 seats
    • Full in-the-round second-level concourse area for access to all amenities
    • Additional concessions and washrooms
    • Addition of 20 premium suites and premium lounge area for more diverse seating options
    • Additional 5,000 square feet of meeting and conference space
    • New arena entrance and Box Office, dividing access to the arena and the Bowes Event Centre
    • Increased catering kitchen capacity
  • Benefits:
    • Enhanced user experience and customer service
    • Larger concerts, conferences and sporting events
    • Space flexibility to do daily multi-rentals
    • Increased revenue potential
    • Conservative estimate of 175 event days annually
    • Significant economic impact on local businesses
    • Increased life expectancy of 30+ years
  • Impacts:
    • $55,000,000 cost estimate (without phasing)
    • Debt servicing 30 years @ 2.6% with an annual payment of $2,651,663.98

The survey will run until September 20, and once complete, the feedback will be collected and reviewed. Those findings will be presented to City Council before the budget deliberations in November and will be used to help guide the City’s plan in how to upgrade the facility, and how much money should be allotted to the project.
