Caribbean Association of Grande Prairie to host fashion show, cultural event

Sep 12, 2020 | 11:00 PM

As part of this year’s Alberta Culture Days, the Caribbean Association of Grande Prairie (CAGP) will be hosting a ‘Caribbean Fashion Show’ and have cultural displays up at the Montrose Cultural Centre.

The event will run over two days, with the outfits on display, and a hairdresser demonstrating some hairstyles associated with the Caribbean culture on Friday, September 25 from 2:00 to 5:30 p.m. Then, on Saturday the 26, the event continues from 1:00 to 5:30 p.m. and will feature the fashion show.

There will also be cultural exhibits on display for the public to view and live Caribbean music performances over the course both days.

Chairperson for the Caribbean Association of Grande Prairie, Shannae Luke, says the group wanted to share the Caribbean culture with the people of Grande Prairie. She says when they were asked by the Ministry of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women to host an event, they knew they had to maintain the COVID-19 public health guidelines.

Luke says at first they wanted to hold an event based on Caribbean food, but changed direction in order to meet the COVID guidelines, and instead started thinking of something fun and vibrant and “would make you feel like you were on vacation .”

“Those are the criteria we had in mind when we were planning the event, and then we just sat down one day and the idea of a fashion show just popped in our minds.”

The two-day event is open to the public, though attendees will need to follow the COVID-19 guidelines , including wearing masks and maintaining physical distancing. Luke says the event will have limited capacity, but the public can still catch the show online, as both days will be live streamed through the CAGP’s Facebook page and on the CAGP’s Instagram page.
