Local resolutions to be discussed at AUMA Convention

Sep 19, 2020 | 7:00 AM

Two resolutions from Peace Country municipalities will go the upcoming Alberta Urban Municipalities Association Convention.

One from the Town of Spirit River suggests the province should reimburse municipalities for the education portion of property taxes where the owner did not pay their taxes. The resolution says that while municipalities can seize property and re-sell it, the cumulative cost for education taxes can add up by the time this process is done. That plus the property could sell for less than what is owing, meaning another cost for ratepayers.

The resolution was seconded by the Town of Sexsmith.

Another from the City of Grande Prairie calls for the AUMA to push the provincial government to increase the Emergency 911 Levy Regulation from 44 cents to 97 cents per month per wireless device. The City wants this done before this regulation expires at the end of March. City officials want to see this so 911 call centres can have modernized technology. The CRTC says all outdated technology would be decommissioned by March 2024.

The AUMA Convention is being held online for the first time ever this year.

All members of Grande Prairie city council will be taking part.

It will take place September 24 and 25.

From now through next Wednesday, municipal politicians will also be taking part in some education sessions AUMA is offering.

Topics those will cover include economic recovery and resilience, policing, affordable housing, and ending systemic racism.

Local politicians will also have a chance t speak with provincial cabinet ministers.

Keynote address will come from Peter Mansbridge and Hayley Wickenheiser. Brett Kissel will provide the evening entertainment on the first night.
