Hearings on Quebec project that would use Peace Region natural gas start Monday

Sep 21, 2020 | 1:24 PM

Public hearings on a Quebec energy project that would use natural gas from the Peace Country start today in Chicoutimi, Quebec.

Energie Saguenay would see a $7 billion LNG plant built close to the port in that community. It would process 1.5 billion cubic feet of gas per day. An existing pipeline would take the gas to Northern Ontario, then a new 780-kilometre line would take it the rest of the way.

The first part of the hearings will be a question-and-answer period.

Attendance is being limited to 250 people because of pandemic restrictions, but other people will be able to follow online. People can also ask questions by video and teleconference.

This will be followed by filing papers, which starts on October 26.

A report to Quebec’s environment ministry is due by June 15.

A number of local politicians on both sides of the Peace have written letters in support of the proposal.
