Mild temperatures expected for the Peace Region this fall

As summer officially comes to an end on Tuesday, Environment and Climate Change Canada says the Peace Region can expect some fairly seasonal weather this fall season.

“Generally, I think the fall forecast for much of Alberta, the one that we issued at the beginning of September suggests that we are going to have a mild period during September, October and November,” explained Dan Kulak with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

“Probably dry as well and certainly, I think September so far has been shaping up to be a relatively decent month for harvest conditions out there in terms of some dry weather.”

The first official day of fall technically gets underway on September 22. However, according to Kulak, meteorologists around the world normally begin to look at the first day of fall on September 1.

While the leaves begin to change colours and we move into the fall, Kulak says we always should be paying attention to the forecast to make sure if there is a chance of any type of snowfall.

“It’s interesting to talk about the possibilities of the first snow fall for Grande Prairie and Northwestern Alberta. Interestingly enough, a few stats are that if you are going to get a big dump of snow in the Grande Prairie area, October is actually the third most likely month of year to get a big dump of snow.”

“A big dump of snow I find is 20 centimeters or more in a day. Most common in December and January, with December and January being tied essentially and then next on the list is October. It’s a transition time of year, where you actually have a significant chance of getting big dumps of snow.”

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Seasonal Forecast for the Winter Season will be released at the end of November.
