Individual COVID-19 case confirmed at GP Composite High School

Sep 22, 2020 | 3:45 PM

The Grande Prairie Public School Division says they have been informed by Alberta Health Services that an individual from Grande Prairie Composite High School has tested positive for COVID-19.

A news release issued by the school division Tuesday afternoon says all families with students that have been in close contact with the confirmed case have been notified and will be contacted by AHS for further direction. They add that in-person classes will continue for all students who have not been identified as a close contact.

The case becomes the third confirmed case of COVID-19 in a Grande Prairie area school, following cases being identified at Whispering Ridge Community School (Peace Wapiti Public School Division) and Riverstone School.

Below is the letter sent home to families of students from the High School from Deputy Superintendent James Robinson on Tuesday:

Dear Parent / Guardian,

We have been notified by Alberta Health Services (AHS) that a case of COVID-19 has been diagnosed in an individual from Grande Prairie Composite High School. A direct message has been sent, through SchoolMessenger, to the parents / guardians of any students who have been identified as a close contact of the individual who was diagnosed. If you have not received a close contact message your student has not been identified as a close contact at this time and can continue to attend in-person classes.

The school remains open to in-person learning for all students, and we are working closely with AHS to ensure necessary measures are in place to protect all students and staff. This includes cleaning and disinfecting items touched by the individual and removing and storing items that cannot be cleaned and disinfected (paper, books, etc.) in a sealed container. Our facilities staff will also have disinfected key spaces.

It is important that we respect the confidentiality of the individual. Alberta Health Services will be contacting parents/guardians of students, as well as any staff/visitors/volunteers who may have been in close contact with the individual who has tested positive. Any students who may be directed to quarantine by AHS will be supported by the school in maintaining course work during the designated period.

We remind parents/guardians of students, as well as any staff/visitors/volunteers to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19. The Alberta Health daily checklist can be found here. Please remember to complete the checklist each day prior to attending school. If your child has any of the symptoms of illness listed on the Alberta Health daily checklist, please fill out the online Alberta Health Services COVID-19 self-assessment or call Health Link at 811 and keep your child at home. Alberta Health Services will continue to monitor the situation and we will continue to provide additional information to parents/guardians as it is available.

If you have any questions, please contact your school.

Sincerely,

James Robinson Deputy Superintendent
