Sturgeon Lake teen wins first runner up title at Miss Teen Canada Globe pageant

On September 27, Hailey Hamelin-Wilson of Sturgeon Lake was awarded the title of Miss Teen Canadian Teenager Globe for 2020-21.

Hamelin-Wilson was given the first runner up in the teens category, which will give her the opportunity to compete on the international stage in the near future.

This was Hamelin-Wilson’s first competition. It took place in Toronto from September 16-27 and featured different models from across Canada.

As someone from Sturgeon Lake, Hamelin-Wilson says she feels proud to represent her community on a national and soon to be international stage.

“It’s very humbling because I have a lot of support behind me and it feels like I’ve opened doors for a lot of the other girls in my community. Just because with me being a part of this pageant, a lot of girls have come forward and asked about my experience and how they could get involved too.”

Hamelin-Wilson says that she got the idea to get into modeling from her peers and adds that her Instagram account was also a big factor.

“Being younger I was always told I should do modeling and that I would be good for it. Just from Instagram, I started to get some attention and then I got a message one day from one of the previous Queens from the pageant and she asked me if I would be interested in participating in it.”

“It kind of gave me a signal, maybe I should actually try it out and see what happens. Whether I win or lose, I still get experience.”

Now that Hamelin-Wilson has some hardware, she’ll wait to see when her next competition takes place.

She says she is eligible for competitions in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Philippines and Europe, because of uncertainty related to COVID-19.

While she has to wait for her next competition, she adds that anyone who is interested in modeling should go ahead and give it a shot.

“For anybody who would be interested in getting into pageantry, it is a great opportunity to discover one’s self and open more doors for you in the future. It’s not all about the beauty of the person, it’s about how hard you want to work.”

Hamelin-Wilson is currently enrolled in her third semester at the University of Alberta where she is a history major.
