Sexsmith resident attempts to put out garage fire with garden hose

Oct 16, 2020 | 7:40 AM

The Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service is reminding people to only attempt to control fires if they are small and it’s safe to do so, after a Sexsmith resident attempted to put out a garage fire with a garden hose Friday morning.

Fire crews from the Sexsmith Fire Department and County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service Dunes and Clairmont Stations were called to the Rycroft Ridge subdivision in Sexsmith at approximately 4:45 a.m. on Friday, October 16.

There, firefighters discovered a vehicle on fire in an attached garage, and a resident actively trying to fight the fire with a garden hose. Fire crews brought the blaze under control before it could spread to any other structures, including the residence.

It appears that the blaze originated in the engine compartment of the vehicle, though the fire is currently under investigation by the County Fire Marshall.

“Thankfully, the residents of the home discovered the fire quickly and an early call to 911 was made, while they attempted to action the fire with resources they had available.

“We would like to remind the community that you should only attempt to control fires if they are small and it is safe to do so, and always follow the directions of fire department personnel on their arrival. Vehicle fires can be very dangerous, and the smoke released when they are on fire is extremely toxic” said Regional Fire Service Deputy Chief Jason Nesbitt in an early morning release.

No injuries were reported as a result of this fire.
