Drug trafficking charges have been laid against a man after Grande Prairie RCMP seized drugs and cash during a traffic stop on Sunday night.

On October 18 at around 6:00 p.m., police observed a suspicious truck in the area of 97A Street and 100 Avenue downtown. They say the licence plate did not match the truck, where they then conducted a traffic stop.

Police stopped the suspect and upon further investigation, authorities learned the driver did not have a valid driver’s licence and had outstanding warrants for his arrest.

With that, police arrested the suspect and searched the truck, where they located 47.29 grams of bluish/purple fentanyl, 53 grams of methamphetamine and $1655 in Canadian currency.

RCMP arrested the 56-year-old male driver from Fort McMurray, who was not named by authorities. The man has been charged with:

  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Fentanyl
  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Methamphetamine
  • Possession of Proceeds of Crime under $5000.00
  • Operate an uninsured vehicle on a highway
  • Operate a vehicle without a subsisting licence.

The suspect remains in custody and is awaiting a judicial interim hearing.

“Crime reduction continues to be a policing priority for the Grande Prairie RCMP. Proactive enforcement such as this demonstrates our commitment to Alberta’s Crime Reduction strategy and helps create a safer community,” Grande Prairie RCMP say in a news release.

On Sunday, RCMP issued an alert to the public over the dangers of street drugs in the region being laced with unknown substances that could be dangerous to unknowing users.

The alert came after two people died and four others were sent to hospital Sunday morning after they were believed to have suffered overdoses at a Grande Prairie home.
