Grande Sunset Theatre gears up for big Halloween weekend

Oct 21, 2020 | 5:00 AM

The Grande Sunset Theatre is gearing up for one final big weekend before winter fully hits the Peace Region.

With Halloween falling on a weekend this year, Theatre president Lionel Robbins says there will be lots of entertainment for those in attendance.

“We want to give everybody something to remember so they come back in the spring when we re-open. We are running Halloween movies all of that weekend.”

“Friday night (October 30) we are running a kid’s one to start, so we are running Hotel Transylvania and then after that, we are running The Grudge, which obviously that one isn’t for kids. We’ll run a family show and then kind of an 18 plus horror movie on the Friday night.”

Robbins says that since there will be an 18 plus movie after the showing of Transylvania, on October 30, he says that if you have a ticket, you don’t have to show up or stay for both movies.

Since Halloween falls on a Saturday night this year, Robbins says that he and his team are going all out to make sure that those in attendance are getting the Halloween jitters.

“On Halloween night it’s all 18 plus horror. We are having a Friday The 13th “Scarathon”. We are running the first three original movies, we are having all of the volunteers dress up in scary costumes. There is a nice dark parking lot at Evergreen Park, so it’s not going to be for the faint of heart, but we are hoping that we are going to get a really big turnout if people just want a good old scare at the drive-in.”

The Grande Sunset Theatre is a completely non-profit organization, and all of the money that goes towards the admission for the movie is then donated to a local charity that helps out with volunteering for the night.

Tickets for each movie cost $30 per vehicle.

Robbins tells EverythingGP that they’ve been able to raise a solid amount of money for various charities and organizations.

“We’ve been averaging about a little over $1,000 per weekend, per charity. I think by the time we are done, we will have done about 22-23 weekends, so we’ll be between $20,000 – $25,000 grand worth of net proceeds.”

Robbins adds that it would be encouraging to give some of the charities a final boost as they gear up for the holiday season.

He mentioned that he hopes that they can continue to keep the theatre busy until next year.

“We’ve already had inquires for November and December. We are open to any ideas on how to keep the theatre humming. We want to turn it into an event centre and we are really excited to see what we can morph it into.”

This coming weekend on October 23, the theatre will show Barnyard, and on October 24, the theatre will show Brides Maids.
