Legislation proposed to further recognize First Nations policing

Oct 21, 2020 | 3:52 PM

EDMONTON – The Alberta government has introduced proposed changes to the province’s Police Act, which would expand powers for First Nations police forces and increase their stature.

Justice Minister Kaycee Madu says the changes are part of a number of proposed amendments under the Justices Statutes Amendment Act.

Madu says First Nations police forces have been in place in Alberta for up to two decades.

But that they haven’t received the credit they deserve for the work they’ve done in Indigenous communities.

He says the changes would recognize them as bona fide police forces and give the same status as major municipal forces in Calgary and Edmonton.

Madu says the First Nations officers would be able to issue tickets and enforce them through the courts.

There are currently three First Nations police services in Alberta.
