Snow delays Wapiti Road upgrades

Oct 22, 2020 | 5:30 AM

The snow means a delay in the completion of paving work along Wapiti Road.

The target date had been mid-October.

City capital construction supervisor Mark Hoseasson says the contractor is committed to finishing the project this year.

“As soon as we get a weather window. He figures he needs about four days of paving and then that will get the road back to fully operational, so then we’ll be able to get that part of the project completed. There is a little bit more of the box culvert that we have to do, but we’re outside of the roadway now, so that can continue.”

He adds both temperatures and moisture impact paving work.

“You’ll probably see a lot of activity where they’ll start trying to remove that snow and sweep it off and stuff like that, so we just need that temperature to come up a bit so that road can dry enough for us to put the asphalt down because we don’t want to trap a layer of moisture between the layers of asphalt.”

Hoseasson says the completion of the work will depend on the weather.

“It is going to be day-by-day here. As soon as they can get enough good weather days to pave, they’ll get on it. I guess I would just say early November, we’re hoping everything should be back completely open on that road.”

Hoseasson says the city is thanking residents for their patience and is asking for them to stay patient a bit longer.
