Enforcement Services completes successful positive ticket program in 2020

Enforcement Services in Grande Prairie says they’ve completed a successful summer after their officers issued a total of 29 positive tickets as a part of their positive ticket program.

The positive ticket program was launched back in June of this year and is meant to reward youth for practicing safety protocols while keeping active and helping out other youth in the community.

Practicing safety protocols can include wearing a helmet while biking or skateboarding.

Ways youth can get tickets for helping out others can include showing a younger kid how to ride a skateboard or helping them out with something they might be struggling with.

Shawn Hibbert, the Operation Support Supervisor for Enforcement Services says this program was about bringing positivity to the community.

“We thought this would be a good time to get out there in the community, interact with the children and youth that were out there and just to encourage the positive community building and community spirit within the City. It was well-received by the children and youth that were out there.”

The tickets were mainly handed out by Enforcement Services officers who were on the bike patrol throughout the parks in Grande Prairie this summer.

If officers witnessed youth performing good deeds or respecting the safety rules, they would issue a ticket. Hibbert tells EverythingGP that every youth who was issued a ticket received a small prize.

“Regardless of the age of the child, if they were between 3-10, they would have a certain kind of prize pack with prizes appropriate for those age range. For older youth we have stuff like earbuds, so we could really tailor the prize pack to the age range to the youth coming in to redeem a ticket.”

Once a ticket is redeemed, that youth is also entered into a major prize draw. This year saw Enforcement Services giveaway a Nintendo Switch Lite and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe bundle.

Hibbert adds that he wants to see the program return in 2021, as it encourages people to do positive things within the community.

“I was excited to get the positive ticket program rolling again, just to encourage that positive interaction between our department and the City and just to really encourage children and youth that the little things make a difference.”

“It builds up positive interactions between the citizens, especially our youngest citizens. Anything we can do to encourage that, I think that’s a plus.”
