No trick-or-treating, but Prairie Mall still putting on Halloween festivities

Oct 24, 2020 | 7:00 AM

The Prairie Mall has announced their plans for Halloween.

October 31 is normally one of the busier days of the year for the mall. On average, the mall will see over 4,000 tick or treaters walk through the doors and collect candy from various stores inside the mall within a two-hour time frame.

However, as Kristin Schemenauer with the Prairie Mall explains, because of the COVID-19 restrictions in place, having 4,000 trick-or-treaters walk through the mall wouldn’t provide a safe environment for everyone involved.

“Obviously with all the distancing protocols we just knew that we weren’t going to be able to offer trick or treating in mall this time, so we’ve decided to go a little different and take it virtually.”

While there won’t be candy to giveaway this year, Schemenauer tells EverythingGP that they have gotten creative and want to involve as many people as possible.

“Starting on October 25, people will be able to enter our pumpkin carving contests, which will run through the week until November 1. The same will also go for our costume contest. We will have costume catagories for kids, for adults, and they’ll be entering online on our Facebook page.”

Prizes for the costume contest are still being determined. The grand prize winners will be chosen by a panel of judges after Halloween. Schemenauer says for the costume contest specifically, she expects a lot of entries to come in on Halloween night, when everyone is dressed up and in the spirit.

Also starting on October 25, the Prairie Mall will be having a Family Night of Fun giveaway on their Facebook page as a lead up to Halloween. The grand prize will feature a basket of Halloween movies, treats and activities. More details of how the giveaway will work will be released on the Prairie Mall’s Facebook page.

According to Schemenauer, the hope is that between 50-100 people will participate in the virtual activities, but she hopes that as many people as possible take part in the events.

The mall will be open on Halloween until 6:00 p.m., Schemenauer says that is very unlikely that any stores will be handing out candy to visitors.
