City of Grande Prairie adds 39 new COVID-19 cases over weekend

The City of Grande Prairie added 39 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend, while the County of Grande Prairie added four new cases between Friday and Sunday. Those new cases come as the province of Alberta added 1,440 new cases during that time span (364 on Friday, 572 on Saturday and 504 on Sunday).

With the new cases in the two municipalities, there are now 91 active cases in the City of Grande Prairie, while there are 15 in the County of Grande Prairie. With that, the City’s Mandatory Face Covering (Mask) Bylaw has been triggered, making it mandatory for residents to wear a mask, or face covering, in all indoor, enclosed, or substantially enclosed public spaces and public vehicles in Grande Prairie, unless the person is separated from others by an installed screen, shield or other barrier.

New cases were added in several other areas around the Peace Country. Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day October 25 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 242 cases (91 active, 149 recovered, two deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 82 cases (15 active, 67 recovered)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 21 cases (four active, 16 recovered, one death)
  • Birch Hills County: Six cases (one active, five recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 27 cases (12 active, 15 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: Four cases (one active, three recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 76 cases (one active, 65 recovered, ten deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 53 cases (one active, 47 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 23 cases (five active, 17 recovered, one death)
  • M.D. of Peace: 33 cases (five active, 28 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 16 cases (all recovered)
  • Clear Hills County: 96 cases (three active, 92 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: Nine cases (all recovered)
  • County of Northern Lights: 58 cases (one active, 57 recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 414 cases (six active, 395 recovered, 13 deaths)

The weekend’s sharp rise in provincial case totals comes as 16,367 tests were processed on Friday (2.2 per cent positivity rate), 17,106 on Saturday (3.3 per cent positivity rate) and 12,666 on Sunday (3.98 per cent positivity rate). A total of 120,879 people from the North Zone have been tested as of Sunday, a rise of 2,759 over the weekend.

Hospitalizations remain low in the North Zone, with four people in hospital, two of whom are in intensive care. There are 118 people in hospital across Alberta, 16 of whom are in an ICU.

Seven more fatalities were linked to COVID-19 over the weekend, bringing the province’s death toll to 307. The North Zone’s fatality total remains at 35 as of October 25.
