MD Of Greenview to push for new industrial area south of Grande Prairie on its own

Nov 5, 2020 | 12:17 PM

The MD of Greenview is going ahead with the development of an industrial area south of Grande Prairie on its own.

The Tri-Municipal Industrial Partnership idea that included the City and County of Grande Prairie has been abandoned.

The MD’s Kyle Reiling says they want to refocus on what the plans will be for promotion and development of the area.

“The reality is that most of the industry already located within the area already utilizes services, employees, and goods based out of the greater Grande Prairie region. So, as future development happens in the Greenview Industrial Gateway, the City of Grande Prairie and County of Grande Prairie will be direct beneficiaries of spin-offs. We all benefit as a region.”

The City and County remain supporters of the project and Reiling says all three will continue to work together.

Reiling adds the work continues, something he refers to as “exciting times.”

“We’re just doing a re-analysis of where we sit competitively in the market and putting together information (like) budgets, mapping, imaging, a complete overview of the area. We’ll be incorporating a web site (and) a GIS portal.”

Reiling says about 32,500 hectares of land lies within the study boundaries. He adds they will be promoting this location to petrochemical manufacturing, as well as oil and gas businesses.

“We sit on the Montney which is a very abundant supply of low-cost natural gas feedstock. The focus on attracting industry would centre around that (and) access to rail, access to utilities, pipelines, gridded power, (and) a strong transportation network.”

Reiling says geothermal development would also tie in with this proposal. He calls this area “one of the pre-eminent sources for geothermal opportunities” and is something that would be included when the area is being promoted.

Reiling says while they are “very excited” about timelines for when this information would be released, they can’t commit to any firm times right now. he adds they do plan to have more “in the near future.”
