Grande Prairie MLA and Minister of Municipal Affairs Tracy Allard was in Grande Prairie Friday to end the week with some good news for a few local non-profit organizations.

Allard announced that the Province of Alberta will be providing over $125,000 to Sunrise House, in support of the Grande Prairie Youth Emergency Shelter Society.

The Sunrise House provides emergency shelter to youth aged 12-17 who are at risk of becoming homeless.

Allard says she is happy to see the money going towards an organization that plays such an important role in the community.

“It’s huge. We ran on a platform that said we would protect society’s most vulnerable and this is an example of civil society stepping up to do just that. I couldn’t be more pleased to support them with this funding.”

“To see this money at a critical time like this, for an organization that is doing incredible work for deserving youth, really changing the trajectory of where their life could go and will go, it warms my heart.”

Tanya Wald, the Executive Director of the Sunrise House says this announcement will have a major impact on the organization.

“This donation was really huge for us because this particular program we lost funding on this, so this couldn’t have come at a better time. The program that this is, is really critical for kids being able to move through crisis, move into independence and just live really successful lives.”

A bulk of the $125,000 will go towards their Youth Navigator Program which helps youth aged 15-24 who don’t have a safe home to return to, and will be living independently.

“It focuses on everything from mental health, to job readiness, education, whatever those kids need to be successful,” explained Wald.

Wald added that this funding could help over 100 kids per year.

Allard also announced that the Suicide Prevention Resource Centre would be receiving $135,000 to help provide more resources to the community, $125,000 towards the Grande Prairie Legion and their facility upgrades and $92,000 to the GP Live Theatre Society.

The funding towards the Grande Prairie Legion and the GP Live Theatre Society will be used to upgrade their facilities
