Avalanche survivors start backcountry safety campaign

Nov 14, 2020 | 4:04 PM

Three friends from Canmore, Alberta, have started a campaign to keep people safe in the backcountry this winter.

The trio survived a deadly avalanche on a backcountry ski trip near Golden, B-C in February 2016.

Dave Crompton says they expect people will continue to spend time outdoors with COVID-19 restrictions in place and the group wants to make sure they do their research before heading out.

One of the things the friends learned was that hiring a guide isn’t a substitute for personal responsibility.

None of them had done any research on the snow conditions that day.

Sheila Churchill, whose husband Doug died from injuries caused by the avalanche, says she wishes she had spoken up about going into terrain she wasn’t comfortable in.

And Mitch Putnam says there were too many people exposed on the slope that day.

The group’s website shares safety tips and tells their story.
