County approves funding for La Glace water system upgrades

Dec 7, 2020 | 1:13 PM

County of Grande Prairie Council has confirmed $250,000 for upgrades to the La Glace Water Treatment System, which will serve as its contribution towards the $1 million project.

The remaining 75 per cent of the project is covered through a grant from the province’s Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program, which was announced back in July and will allow for an expanded and more reliable water service in the hamlet.

Reeve Leanne Beaupre says the current system only services select properties in La Glace, so a new well will be drilled for the new system, with the goal of tying in all existing wells.

“We’ll be looking at how all of these wells are associated with all of the different homes that are there,” said Beaupre. “Some (properties) are on private wells, some of them are on shared well systems.”

Beaupre and the rest of council have tasked administration with building and presenting a report on a “fiscally responsible solution” for the new system, and whether it should be municipally operated, or a privately provided service.

“We just want to make sure that we are delivering the best product that we can for the amount of money that we are spending in La Glace.”

Not only will administration be reporting back on the La Glace water system, but council has also sought a separate report on all County-run water systems, which are offered in a litany of different ways across the County, according to Beaupre.

“We want to make sure what we are providing is the best type of product, as well as it is the best value for the money.”

As for the project in La Glace, Beaupre says the new system will be housed in “fire hall 2”, or the former La Glace fire hall that has recently been vacated by the Regional Fire Service for its new home. The current system sits in the original fire hall, or “fire hall 1”.

An exact timeline has not been announced for completion of the project.
