Environment Canada has expanded its extreme cold warning to include the Grande Prairie-Beaverlodge-Valleyview forecast area.

The weather office had issued the warning for the North Peace area Friday, as an arctic ridge makes its way through the prairies into next week.

“Extremely cold wind chill values between minus 40 and minus 50 will persist into next week,” says Environment Canada. “There will be some moderation at times, typically during daylight hours.”

They add to watch for cold related symptoms, like shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes, as frostbite can develop in a matter of minutes in such temperatures.

“If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.”

Saturday’s daytime high for Grande Prairie is minus 26, with temperatures dropping to minus 39 overnight, with a wind chill of minus 45.
