Village of Hythe unveils new Crokicurl rink

Mar 4, 2021 | 12:13 PM

The Village of Hythe’s new Crokicurl rink is ready to go for the remainder of the winter season.

The new rink is located inside the Hythe baseball diamond, across the street from the Curling Club.

For those who don’t know what Crokicurl is, it is a game that combines the board game Crokinole and the sport of Curling.

Each team participates on a frozen sheet of ice, painted like a curling rink. Players are then split up into two teams of one or two players and each team gets four rocks. The goal of each team is to then try to get their rock as close to the bullseye as possible.

Getting your rock in the outer blue ring is worth five points, the white ring is 10 points, the red ring is 15 points, and the bullseye is worth 20 points.

Leona Hanson the CAO for the Village of Hythe says they’re happy to finally be able to open their newest recreation option

“With the warm weather this winter it was a little delayed getting off the ground, but in the new year the grooming of the ice surface was finished, and it is now ready for people to enjoy.”

Hanson tells EverythingGP the rink was built with the help of various different grants and by members of the community.

Hanson recommends that residents come out and give Crokicurl a try, as it is free and easy to play.

“We do have a storage shed on-site there that has the curling rocks in there. You just have to give us a call, grab a key and go down and enjoy a game. We also have the rules posted on the shed.”

“The other option for people is to bring their own containers. You can use the plastic milk jugs, fill them with water and let them freeze. There’s lots of options for people.”

While it hasn’t been open for that long, Hanson says excitement around the rink in the community has been building, as they’ve been working on building the rink since last spring.

“We’ve had a lot of excitement on Facebook. The numbers of folks playing is unknown at this time, but we’ve certainly had a buzz of activity when we let people know that it is open and ready to go.”

“We’ve been watching for pictures and we encourage people to send us a picture of them out playing on the rink and have fun with it.”

The game can be played during the day or even at night, as the lights for the baseball diamond will remain on into the later parts of the evening.

The rink will be in operation until it has melted.
