Mighty Max expected to receive Zolgensma next week

Mar 9, 2021 | 2:12 PM

Fairview, Alberta’s Mighty Max Sych is expected to receive the drug Zolgensma as early as Tuesday, March 16, according to his father Bowden Sych.

“The plan is to travel to Edmonton on Monday, where they will admit him to the Stollery Hospital,” explained Bowden. “If everything goes according to plan, he should receive the treatment on Tuesday.”

Prior to getting approved for the Zolgensma, Mighty Max had to have a series of blood tests completed, including having a blood sample sent to the Netherlands to determine if he had the proper anti-bodies to receive Zolgensma.

All of the tests came back looking good, which is why Max is able to potentially receive the treatment next week.

Once Max gets Zolgensma, he’ll be watched closely by doctors to make sure everything is okay.

“Basically, the biggest risk of the medication can be harmful to the liver, so the doctors just want to monitor the blood work and make sure the liver is going to be good,” said Bowden. “He’ll be on medication for a couple of months to protect the liver and make sure everything is good.”

While there is good news of Max finally being able to receive the treatment he has desperately needed, Bowden says the recovery for Max will be challenging.

“He’ll stay in hospital until they deemed his lab results to be acceptable. When they get discharged (my wife Bryarly) and Max will have to self-quarantine and do weekly blood work to monitor the liver function.”

Unfortunately, Bowden will be away from his son and wife for an extended period of time, as the blood work will have to be completed in Calgary.

Along with his recovery, Max will have to go through physiotherapy and rehab, which Bowden says will be a lengthy process.

“He’s never used lots of the muscles from his waist down, so we basically have to start as if he were a baby,” said Bowden. “It’s very small steps. Hopefully, we can teach him how to stand, and then after standing work on walking.

“It’s a very long process, but at least we have the ability to work with him and see improvement.”

EverythingGP will continue to update on Mighty Max as more information becomes available.
