UPDATE: Fire brought under control following explosion at oilfield site

Apr 3, 2021 | 8:07 AM

UPDATE: Fire crews say the fire on an oil lease near Range Road 81 and Township Road 722A is under control.

Results of air quality monitoring found no current risk to the public around the site, which can sometimes result from a fire of this nature. Air quality in the area may be reduced while the fire continues to burn.

The Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership has also been deactivated, and the Alberta Energy Regulator is on site.

Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership has been activated and residents near an Anegada Oil Corporation lease site west of the city have been put on evacuation alert after an early Saturday morning fire at the oilfield site.

County Regional Fire Services and the Wembley department responded to a report of an explosion near Range Road 81 and Township Road 722A at around 2:40 a.m. Saturday morning.

Once they arrived, they found several tanks containing crude oil and produced water to be on fire.

Municipal fire services are working with industrial fire contractors and Anegada Oil corporation to take care of the fire.

There will be a significant amount of heavy black smoke coming from the site, but fire officials say there is no risk to the public, other than nearby residents to the site who may still be asked to evacuate at a moment’s notice.

The public is asked to stay clear of the area.
