Technical Search and Rescue Association launches annual Father’s Day raffle

Apr 5, 2021 | 1:59 PM

The Technical Search and Rescue Associations’ annual Father’s Day raffle is underway.

The association operates throughout the Peace Region and is called upon by RCMP or the fire department if crews need assistance with any missing person searches, swift water rescue, ice water rescue or slope rescue missions. The goal of the organization is to ensure those that might be in danger get home safely.

Bailey Randolph, the Fundraising Director for the Technical Search & Rescue Association says fundraisers like this are critical for the organization, as it helps them continue to provide a valuable service to residents throughout the Peace Region.

“Our funding is based off these fundraisers and any grants that we get. The money that comes from our fundraisers helps keep us operational and our equipment up to date.”

The Technical Search and Rescue Association is made up completely of volunteers and is the main search and rescue group for the County of Grande Prairie and the M.D. of Greenview.

During last year’s raffle, the organization was able to raise $16,000. That total was lower than previous years, as the organization was greatly impacted by restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic.

With fundraising efforts slowly getting back to normal this year, Randolph tells EverythingGP they are hoping to raise enough money to upgrade some of their most important equipment.

“We are looking to purchase a new fleet truck, as we are having some issues with our current truck. That would be huge for us because that fleet truck we are looking to replace is the truck that deploys all of our {utility terrain vehicles]. It also carries other gear in support of our primary vehicles. It is an important piece of equipment for us.”

For the second straight year, the raffle tickets will be sold online to allow as many people as possible to participate.

Randolph says this year, they kept the prizes local to help support local businesses.

“We really wanted to stick with local prizes. The first-place prize is a four-night fishing trip with Alberta Adventures and that includes a flight out of Peace River and a charter out to the cabins. The second-place prize is a $1,500 gift card to Trapper Gords and then the third-place prize is a barbeque night package. The prizes are really awesome.”

The draw for the grand prizes will be made on Father’s Day which is June 20.
