Keep safe, stay healthy, follow public health regulations says Grande Prairie Mayor

Apr 6, 2021 | 7:28 PM

Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton says we have known that provincial regulations could change at any time with the rapid spread of the virus and its variants that cause COVID-19.

Clayton says she “absolutely appreciates and understands people’s exhaustion with COVID” but is also encouraging everyone to continue to follow public health measures.

“Keep safe and stay healthy. First and foremost, we want to protect lives and livelihoods. That being said, taking care of mental health and staying connected with family and friends in safe ways is also of extreme importance. Continuing to support businesses is another way that we need to be supporting our community where you can.”

Clayton says when it comes to supporting local businesses, every little bit helps.

“Over the next couple days, restaurants are providing service to family members as noted. In-house dining will be permitted. This will give the restaurants a little time to prepare. Is it enough time? Probably not.”

Inside dining at pubs and restaurants will not be allowed as of noon Friday.

Clayton adds city officials have heard on a regular basis that restaurants place orders for supplies on a weekly basis.

“We saw situations in BC where, given no notice, restaurants were throwing out hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of food and there isn’t always an opportunity for restaurants to donate that food to appropriate facilities.”

Clayton says every time businesses like this must do what she calls “throwing out money” is another hardship for them and what will happen with eateries not being able to afford to reopen “is yet to be seen.”

Clayton says there are beautification and patio grant programs available through city hall.
