County of Grande Prairie approves new policy on cooperation with other municipalities

Apr 13, 2021 | 5:30 AM

It is being called a policy that formalizes cooperation with other municipalities while also respecting their autonomy.

County of Grande Prairie Council approved the new Intermunicipal Relationships and Regionalization Policy at Monday’s meeting.

Reeve Leanne Beaupre says the County has always had an informal policy but council felt it needed a formal one.

“Council just felt that it was time, in reviewing a lot of our policies, that we should update it, modernize it so that we actually have a formal document and policy that really signifies our intent to prioritize those relationships.”

She adds this is not related to discussions with the city about provincially mandated Intermunicipal Development Plans but is meant to cover all of the County’s partnerships.

“And different organizations that we participate in. For example, we have partnerships in things like (the) Grande Spirit Foundation and the Northern Elected Leaders group as well as the Mayors and Reeves of Alberta.”

Beaupre says this meant to cover relationships with municipalities on both the Alberta and BC sides of the Peace.

“We meet annually with our neighbours (on) the other side of the border and many of the municipalities that have border relationships. Clear Hills and Saddle Hills (Counties) also participate in this group. We meet with our counterparts in the BC Peace and discuss issues that are relevant to all municipalities.”

The policy came into effect as soon as it was approved.
