The Edey Family Community Hall

Community Village renaming hall in honour of Doug Edey & family’s longtime community service

As of May 1, the former Parish Hall in the Community Village in Grande Prairie will be officially renamed The Edey Family Community Hall, in honour of long-time community volunteer Doug Edey and his family.

Chair of the Board of Directors of the Community Village Society of the Peace Country Emilia Hovorka-Spelrem says the dedication and renaming of the hall is meant to show gratitude to not only Doug, but the Edey family as a whole for supporting Doug and helping him become a long-time volunteer and community pillar.

“The Community Village renaming of this building honours the epitome of family ideals. It honours the amazing impact families can have on individual, in a community and to a “Village”,” said Hovorka-Spelrem.

“While Doug Edey has been recognized in our community and in our province for his lifelong dedication to volunteerism and service, The Community Village is acting to acknowledge his entire family. Their name will be recognized in perpetuity for their commitment to him and to each other.”

One of the more recognizable names and faces in Grande Prairie, Doug has been a longtime community volunteer, including with the Grande Prairie Storm and Rotary Club among many other groups and events.

Roy Edey, Doug’s father, says he and his family are deeply honoured by this announcement.

“It has taken our entire family; my late wife Judy (who passed away in 2015) and daughters Kerry and Wanda to make sure Doug had every opportunity to live life to the fullest. There were also many other people that believed in Doug and helped out – like Charlie the bus driver,” Roy recalled.

“He drove Doug to his school, The Peace School of Hope, every day and Charlie looked after Doug like he was his own,” Roy added. “At that school Doug learned to be a leader and discovered his passion for helping others. That passion has existed in Doug since he was four years old”

A formal ceremony will be held at a later date once public health restrictions ease, with the intention of holding a large enough event to allow for a full celebration of the Edey family.
