650,000 more Albertans can get their shots

Albertans 50+ eligible for COVID-19 vaccines starting Friday

The Alberta government’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout plan has been expanded to allow the final two groups in Phase 2 to access their shots.

Starting Friday, April 30, all Albertans aged 50 and older will be able to book their appointments for their shots, as will all First Nations, Metis and Inuit persons aged 35 or older.

The province is also making staff and residents who provide care or support to people in facilities not previously offered doses eligible for their shots. This includes front-line disability workers; staff in group homes, mental health or addiction treatment facilities; children and youth group care workers; and campus-based care providers.

Shots are also being offered to care givers providing services for those most at risk of severe outcomes from contracting COVID-19, including those in long -term care, designated supportive living and licensed supportive living facilities; those who work with immunocompromised people; and parents or guardians of children with chronic conditions under the age of 12.

Front-line police officers and provincial sheriffs who interact with residents at shelters and correctional facilities, as well as Canadian Border Security Agency staff and firefighters are also now eligible.

Albertans can book their appointments at Alberta Health Services clinics by calling 811, or by going through the pharmacies participating in the province’s rollout plan.

Those eligible for vaccines under the previous phases of the rollout plan that haven’t already received a dose are also encouraged to get their shots.

Expanding the eligibility opens up vaccination appointments to an additional 650,000 Albertans.

As of Wednesday, April 27, 1,497,256 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have gone into the arms of Albertans, and 288,595 Albertans are fully immunized.
