New public health restrictions tough for all involved: Mayor Clayton

May 4, 2021 | 8:35 PM

Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton says that the city recognizes the province is in a tough position when it comes to deciding what to do to stop the spread of COVID-19, but knows they will be tough for residents and businesses in the province as well.

“In our community, people are very split on COVID and how to protect their loved ones,” said Clayton, following Premier Jason Kenney’s announcement of the new restrictions.

“We recognize that everybody is in a tough position to balance different needs, whether it’s trying to save your business or whether it’s trying to protect loved ones and seniors in your life.

“Everyone is in a tough position right now.”

However, Clayton thinks the community in Grande Prairie has “rallied together” to fight COVID-19 and get through these challenging times.

“And we recognize that people are tired and the changes and having to adapt puts people in a tough position. It is important for us to understand that the community has worked really hard to fight COVID for over a year and it has demonstrated incredible resilience.”

She adds it looks like there have been a lot of people in Grande Prairie getting vaccinated, which is encouraging to her.

“From everything we’ve seen, uptake to the vaccinations that are available in our community has been great. People are signing up for vaccinations and we’re distributing all the vaccinations that we get.”

Clayton says the city did not know what to expect before the new health measures were announced by Premier Kenney Tuesday night and that municipalities have no input.
