"Exciting plans for the future"

“Historic announcement” on future plans for GPRC to be made Tuesday

Grande Prairie Regional College officials and the Ministry or Advanced Education are to make a “historic announcement” on Tuesday about the future plans for GPRC.

Minister of Advanced Education Demetrios Nicolaides, along with Chair of the GPRC Board of Governors Bridget Hennigar and Acting President and CEO Dr. Glenn Feltham will speak during the virtual announcement scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

College officials say the announcement will cover GPRC’s “exciting plans for the future and how the institution intends to support Alberta’s growth, economic diversification, and competitiveness.”

The announcement will come exactly one week after the province announced Red Deer College (RDC) would be transitioning to become a polytechnic institution.

In 2018, both GPRC and RDC were given the green light by the then NDP government to transition to full universities. Those plans were paused by the UCP government in 2020 as they reviewed recommendations brought forward by the Alberta 2030: Building Skills for Jobs task force.
