Alberta reserving current supply of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines for second doses only
A spokesman for Alberta Health has confirmed that the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine will no longer be administered as a first dose, and the remaining supply will be used for second doses only.
In an email to EverythingGP, Tom McMillan, the Assistant Director of Communications for Alberta Health, says as there are no known future shipments of the vaccine being sent to the province at this time. The current supply of approximately 8,400 doses will only be used for second doses.
Approximately 255,000 first doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine have been administered in Alberta to date.
McMillan says the province is receiving shipments of more than 236,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines this week. He adds it may be determined at a later date, once more research has been done, to use the other two vaccines as second doses for those who have already received an AstraZeneca shot.
