Nitehawk chairlift recovery work ongoing from 2020 landslide

Nearly a year since a landslide caused significant damage to Nitehawk’s ski hill and chairlift, the board and management team are continuing to work on recovery efforts.

On May 19, 2020, a major landslide struck on the west side of the hill. It was powerful enough to move the chairlift towers, push them off their foundations, and down the hill.

The landslide resulted in the chairlift being damaged to the point where it was unsafe to use for the 2020 ski season.

Nitehawk General Manager Johnathan Clarkson said in a release as of right now, there is no straight path forward for getting a new chairlift.

“We’re collecting information towards making a decision on the best path forward,” explained Clarkson. “The goal is to return to some form of normal operations by next winter.”

“It’s not clear what that looks like yet. We’re focused on the best long-term solution for Nitehawk and the community.”

Since last year, Nitehawk has been fundraising money to hopefully replace the chairlift.

Nitehawk is hoping to raise more money from its annual comedy night, a family golf day on June 5 at Bear Paw, and other events and partnerships with the Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta.
