New fundraiser for Sexsmith elevator preservation work to run in June

May 20, 2021 | 5:30 AM

A fundraiser in support of the preservation work at the Sexsmith elevator will launch next month.

It is called The Elevating History Online Fundraiser.

Linda Drysdale with the Sexsmith & District Museum Society says COVID has interrupted normal fundraising, but organizers decided to do something fun for the community.

“There are three phases to this. We’re going to have an online 50/50 raffle running at the same time as an online silent auction. There will also be tickets available for $40.00 that will give you an opportunity to win some amazing prizes.”

Drysdale says one of the things in the silent auction is a painting done on an old roof shingle from the elevator.

“The elevator roof was replaced with the original type of material, which is cedar, and so we had Suzanne Sandboe take some of the shingles and she has painted Elevator Row on a shingle, which is just amazing.”

She adds the draw prizes will include diamonds, a gazebo, dinner for four from the Sawmill, and a gift card wallet worth over $1000.

Tickets for that draw should be available by Friday through the downtown arena box office.

Drysdale says organizers are hoping to raise $25,000. She adds the next step in the preservation is cleaning the inside.

“We did a surface clean on the main floor last year but in order to have people visit, we do require a good cleaning. So, it will be cleaning the upper bins, making sure there is no dust. There will be a coating put on the main floor, just so that people don’t have problems with anything that might be there as far as dust is concerned.”

The Elevating History Online Fundraiser will launch June 3 and run through June 12.
