Active COVID-19 case count in Grande Prairie back below 200

The City of Grande Prairie added six new cases of COVID-19 and 34 recoveries for Friday, May 21, bringing the active case total in the city down by 28 to 191.

Two new cases and nine recoveries were recorded in the County of Grande Prairie for Friday. There are now 73 active cases there.

There were 621 new cases of COVID-19 identified across Alberta following the completion of 9500 tests, resulting in a 6.53 per cent test positivity rate.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day May 21 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 3,819 cases (191 active, 3,602 recovered, 26 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 1,335 cases (73 active, 1,257 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 577 cases (37 active, 536 recovered, four deaths)
  • Birch Hills County: 30 cases (six active, 24 recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 80 cases (two active, 78 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 29 cases (three active, 26 recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 146 cases (two active, 134 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 709 cases (eight active, 689 recovered, 12 deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 354 cases (10 active, 343 recovered, one death)
  • M.D. of Peace: 669 cases (16 active, 653 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 130 cases (13 active, 116 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 135 cases (one active, 133 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 308 cases (one active, 306 recovered, one death)
  • County of Northern Lights: 135 cases (12 active, 123 recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 1,840 cases (140 active, 1,676 recovered, 24 deaths)

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 in Alberta have decreased by 21 to 617 as of Friday night, while the number of ICU patients dropped by 13 to 164.

In the North Zone, 72 people are in hospital (up two), 15 of whom are in intensive care (also up two).

There were six new deaths reported to Alberta Health from across the province over the last 24 hours. This means 2,170 Albertans have now died from COVID-19 complications.

The City of Grande Prairie now has 32.4 per cent of its population with at least one dose of vaccine, with 853 more people having been reported by Alberta Health to have their first jab as of Thursday.

In total, 24,293 Grande Prairie residents have received at least one dose of vaccine.

In the County, 313 more people have been reported to have their first dose. In the east and west County region combined, 11,288 people have received at least one dose, close to 34 per cent of the population.

Across Alberta, 58,655 doses were given out on Thursday, bringing the total number of Albertans who have received at least one dose of vaccine to 2,460,857.

That total means 47.3 per cent of Albertans are immunized with at least one dose. Alberta Health adds 7.8 per cent of the population is fully vaccinated.
